The Modernist painter Laurence Stephen Lowry is known for his distinctive naïve style and his depictions of cityscapes and industrial scenes of northern England.
His paintings are often populated by stylized figures, sometimes referred to as “matchstick men,” as well as factories, mills, and chimneys spewing smoke. Works such as Huddersfield (1973) depict uniform figures and a grayish urban landscape from a distant and elevated vantage point. Lowry’s artworks are often characterized by his use of a limited palette of ivory black, flake white, Prussian blue, ochre, and vermilion.
He took evening classes at the Salford Technical College and the Manchester School of Art, where he studied under Pierre Adolphe Valette, a renowned French Impressionist.
Lowry later worked as a visiting tutor at the Slade School of Fine Art, and had his first solo show in 1939 at London’s Lefevre Gallery; he also exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon during his lifetime.
His work was celebrated in a major posthumous retrospective at Tate Britain in 2013.
