This original palanquin from India is a symbol of royal power.
comprised of a wooden compartment with solid wooden floor and roof resembling an arch or two oyster halves seated on large poles.
Engraved decorations, various shapes and motifs enhance the carriage. Thin drapes would have originally protected from prying eyes.
Only men of certain castes or elephants were allowed to bear the palanquin transporting royals on long journeys and brides to their wedding ceremony.
CONDITION:
Fantastic condition, would be an excellent addition to a museum exhibit. Some original dated repairs present and some damaged wood but still a solid peice which has stood the test of time.
