Many people associate Lowry with ‘matchstick men’ but he is known to have produced works ranging from oil paintings to seascapes and portraits.  He was a great humorist and had intense insight into human nature, characterising it without sentiment.  Unquestionably one of the most celebrated British artists, he is well known for depicting the people of Manchester and Salford, his work being a record of a pre and post World War Two northern industrial town. Later in his life Lowry concentrated on producing figures, either singly or in groups, invariably against a white background. These are now very collectable.
